If you find a way to let people know you’re thinking of them, it can make a world of difference. It might even prevent suicides, either directly, or sad people killing themselves through overeating, drug use or alcoholism. At minimum, it will brighten their day. It might make them one notch prouder of themselves, more positive, energetic, and more likely to participate in meaningful projects.
What you can do: Look in social media for little memes or fun videos and just email them to some people that you barely know. You can add a little personal note, such as “I thought you’d get a kick out of these silly cats.”
Do it every few days or perhaps weekly, but do it randomly. You don’t want to leave the impression that you’re doing it out of obligation to a routine.
If you’re doing this with more than one person, email them individually, otherwise it won’t seem like personal attention at all.
An ongoing correspondence might start from this, and you may be surprised just how interesting some of these shy or lonely people are.
If you’d like to send a YouTube video, you can click the share button beneath the video, then click Share then Embed to copy a link that you can then post into an email. Or, you can just copy the link at the top of your browser window directly when you’re watching a video.
If you’re copying a still image from just about anywhere, you can right click, or on a Mac, [Command] + click, then select something like ‘Save Image’ depending on your browser.
Here are some examples of things you can send:
